SPL in pro-Celtic bias storm
Yes, the Guiness-coated voice of Scotland’s footballing authorities are once again most audible by their very silence. It was Shamrocks and deedley-dee music all round as the SPL succesfully scuppered Dunfermline’s chances of taking anything from this saturday’s home tie with the UEFA Cup finalists.
Pars Chairman John Yorkston has condemned the Premier League supremos for refusing to delay the visit of the Hoops, given that Dunfermline tonight play their make-or-break Fife Cup semi-final against Cowdenbeath.
An enraged Yorkston told Gers@OpenFooty “I feel our final SPL match with Celtic this season will not take place on a level playing field. We at Dunfermline Athletic feel we are doing our very best to raise the profile of the SPL with our performances in the Fife Cup this season and it seems amazingly short-sighted, if not downright ungrateful, to force a crucial league fixture on Jimmy’s players less than 96 hours after our biggest test yet, against Cowdenbeath. In the interest of Sporting Fairness we urge the authorities to put the match back to a later date … we’re free on the 20th of May.”
Dunfermline manager Jimmy Calderwood was also finding it hard to hide his feelings as he sarcastically told us “Aye, well, if it was Celtic who found themsleves in the semi-final of the Fife Cup I doubt very much if they’d be asked to play a league fixture almost the moment they got off the bus! That’s aw ah’m sayin’, if ye know whit ah mean.”
Having checked our records, GERS@OpenFooty can exclusively reveal that Celtic have indeed NEVER been asked to play a league fixture within 96 hours of playing a Fife Cup semi-final. We were declined an interview with Lex “Leprechaun” Gold but the Chief Constable of Fife constabulary has assured us he’ll be stepping up security at East End Park this Saturday, just in case the Pars faithful - who hold a long list of grievences against Scotland’s football top brass - decide to turn up.
