Three cheers for the Red, White and Blue

We ended last season in an all-white number, reminiscent of Real Madrid. We’ll start the 2003/2004 campaign with a sartorial trip across the Spanish capital - this time we’re impersonating Athletico Madrid.

Rangers away strips down the years have often disappointed. The main reason for this is that they usually don’t look like a Rangers strip. Between salmon pinks and tangerine oranges, the change colours rarely give a hint of our club’s identity.

However, our latest garb simply screams “RED WHITE and BLUE”. The five stars round the crest, combined with the retro 72 Cup Winners Cup socks, add the vital sense of history which every Gers kit should eminate.

Last season’s orange number eminated nothing but club-sanctioned bigotry. The huge number of punters who bought it testified to a twisted love of a different kind of history around Ibrox.

Let’s hope the “Athletico Madrid” look goes down even better with the Bears … and that the quantities coming off the shelves show we love the footballing victories of 1873 onwards more than the history of Ireland from 1690 onwards.
