Different managers, different players - same Champions League Rangers
It wasn’t so long ago I saw Kilmarnock winning 3-0 at Ibrox in the SPL so I suppose losing 1-0 to Man United at the same venue in the Champions League should be seen as an improvement. But what about improving on our European record?
When the draw for Group E was made many of us could envisage the English champions running up quite a score in Govan. That they won by the narrowest of margins must be heartening then … mustn’t it?
Nah. Unlike many of the part-time idiots leaving Ibrox tonight smiling about how unlucky we’d been, I was utterly furious. Losing at home to Killie, Dundee, Dundee United etc is one thing - we always know Rangers will come back to dominate the domestic scene. But when you have the chance to actually increase the stock of our club on the world stage, to remind the rest of Europe just how big Rangers actually are - and chuck it - that’s another thing altogether.
Man U were comfortable victors over the piece, yes. But only because we let them off the hook, big time. Peter Lovenkrands did exceptionally to get into some really terrific positions but his finishing in front of goal and crossing with space and time was absolutely awful.
The way the defence backed off Phil Neville for the goal was astonishing, especially given how well our lads went on to play for the rest of the match. This may all sound a bit harsh but Champions League football is all about 100% concentration.
Moreover this momentous match was not lost to any moments of world-class genius. from Van Nistelrooy, Scholes, Giggs et al. It was lost because a team of professional footballers couldn’t do the basics when required.
I can be philosophical about Scottish tournaments - we’ve won enough of them to last a millenium - but in the Champions League, the tournament we MUST win one day - I’ve had ten years of watching Rangers shoot themselves in the foot through sheer inefficiency. We have to get brutal with ourselves.
I hope this little rant is a start.
