I’m so excited!
There’s a new phenomenon being introduced to these games this season: It’s called excitement!
Okay, okay - yeah, I know my duty as a Gers fan is to want my team to win by as many goals as possible as often as possible. Well, I do. I can’t help that - it’s just an instinct now. But surrounding the build-up to so many of our home games over the last few years has been the almost boring certainty of a four or five-goal victory for The Teds.
Anyone who lived through the early-mid eighties will never stare three points for The Gers in the mouth but the element of competition was all but removed from 75% of our matches over the last few campaigns.
To be prayoing for the final whistle against a half-strength Hearts team or needing a wee favour from the ref to secure the points against a budding Dundee United is far from satisfctory in terms of Rangers’ progress under McLeish. But, man - it makes the season ticket worth the money again.
Watching us put on a magnificent display of attacking football to win by six goals is also exciting, and usually preferable, but it’s nice to be reminded that, at Ibrox, the home support’s backing is still needed to get our team through some matches.
So, why oh why does HALF THE BL**DY crowd leave with ten minutes of the game to play … even when there’s only one goal in it?? Bah humbug!
