Prso shows promise - Porto promise the world

Of interest to most Gers observing the action from the Auf Schalke stadium in Gelsenkirchen was the appearance of Dado Prso, the man who’ll be leading the Ibrox line next season.

We’d prefer to have seen our big Croat in the starting XI but bench-warming for the Champions League finalsist is no disgrace - especially when you’ve done so much to get them there -and as soon as his captain was injured in the 22nd minute, Prso was on.

Although, on the night, his Monaco side were outclassed by a canny Porto, there was enough from Dado in his 70-minute stint to show us he’ll do a serious job in the SPL. He put himself about well, showed some nice touches and never gave up.

Yet, call me strange, but the greatest encouragement I took from Uefa’s showpiece club match was NOT the promising display by our latest big signing. For me, the fact that Porto have added the European cup to last season’s Uefa Cup is the most heart-warming story to be extracted from events in Germany.

The Portugese league is every bit as weak, if not weaker, that the SPL and Porto are almost as skint as ourselves. But with a good coach and a strong scouting system, that European success we Bears crave so much is never as far away as you think. All you need to do is want it - and, god knows, we want it more than anyone.
