In absence of your normal eloquent prose, here are my thoughts on the performances against Spurs.
Klos – didn’t have much to do, although had one good save in the first half. Sound as ever.
Ricksen – can’t figure out what the story is here. Are we holding onto him for this season and letting him go for nothing at the end of it, or is he going to sign a new contract? Had a fairly quiet game. It appears that he is going to be the first choice right back this season and will not be played in midfield. Perhaps not as bad a player as many of the support make out, and put in a reasonable performance.
Vanoli – keen but slow. Not the answer for first choice, but worth keeping as a back-up. Distribution and pace let him down big time
Andrews – pleasantly surprised by his performance. Seems to have formed a good partnership alongside Boumsong, and put in a lot of good tackes, including the one that Keane got injured, and won virtually everything in the air, and was unlucky not to score at a corner. A few of his headers went to opposition, and had one moment of weakness in the second half where a misplaced clearance went straight to a Spurs forward, but a very promising start to his Ibrox career.
Boumsong – “the man”. A class act. Nuff said.
Burke – had a nice run in the first half and a great chip in the second half but perhaps needs to get more involved at other times. I’m not convinced we can afford the luxury of 2 wingers against top class opposition. We need more cover both on the left and right of midfield.
Hughes – still not convinced he is got it. Hasn’t come on from the promising player we saw 3 years ago. Did OK, but will suffer against a stronger midfield.
Rae – Very welcome addition to the team. Looks fit, strong and won’t give an inch in midfield. Tough tackling and good distribution, and always looking for the ball. What we have been missing for a few years.
Lovenkrands - Set up Prso’s goal with a run and a misplaced shot, during which he almost lost the ball. This summarises Lovenkrands general play when he gets the ball he almost gets it right, and sometimes he gets lucky. Needs more games but not overly convincing.
Prso – scored one a very unlucky with a header from a corner when he lost his man brilliantly to make space for himself. Looks like he will be a good player but it will take a few more games until he fully settles in and we see the best of him.
Novo – continues to impress. Took his goal well. Nice change after watching Mols and countless other Gers forwards miss such chances over the past few years. Looks sharp and with a good work rate. Could be what we have been looking for. I hope he continues to shove my scepticism right up my ****.
Vignol – came on for the second half, and looked everything a full back should be. Pacey, can tackle and keen to get to the by-line to cross a ball (Lovenkrands take note). Sign him now, Eck!
Thompson & Averladze – when they came on the team seemed to switch to a 4-2-3-1 with Thompson up front on his own. This formation may work well in Spain, but didn’t really take off on Wednesday. I can’t understand Averladze’s reluctance to play upfront, where I feel he is at his best.
Another promising performance and its looking good for us presenting a challenge this year.
Spurs themselves were not that impressive. Neither Fulham nor Spurs looked like they would be a match for the old firm over the recent games, and based on these games you have got to think that top half finishes in the premiership would be straightforward if we were to join the Premiership. We won’t get invited, of course, because teams like Spurs would be scared of us.
PS Benfica are the last team I want.
Derek. Just thought id give you my first impressions of your new signings after watching the Newcastle game. One match doesnt always tell the whole story so remember - FIRST impressions.
Vignol - Your right. Eck - sign him NOW!! Couldnt pass + looked likely to give away needless fouls. Ive always thought Ball would do well in a good team but it seems

I’ve just caught up with news that we had five pages of “Celtic in Crisis” with the broken club crest in that excuse for a newspaper! What a peach - I nearly fell doon the stairs at work laughing when I heard. Is it any wonder some bhoys claim bias in this country when the “leading national newspaper” fails to provide a balanced and fair view of the two main football clubs?
One club has have just finished a season where they won 5 old firm games in a row *6 inlcluding the last game of the previous season), won the League and Cup double, got to the Qtr Final of the UEFA Cup, have built a solid reputation in Europe, have sold all their season tickets with 11,500 in the waiting list and are the first Scottish club to go directly into the Champions League. On the downside they have lost their best player in Henrik Larsson, lost two friendlies 4-2 and 5-1 inside 48 hours and 3000 miles travel and are likely to post a loss of

An unbiased view? It gives it’s “readers” what they crave - sensationalism. It’s a rag thats only worthy of eating chips from.
If anyone tells me that the Daily Retard on Sunday (Sunday Mail) is pro-Rangers after the mind boggling headline “FILTH” then they need their head examined.
Why “FILTH” when 15,000 Rangers fans behaved superbly well (as the 10,000 did in Fulham, despite the lies of some message boards)? Because the bad old Rangers fans had the nerve to sing about Alan Shearer being a bit of a ham-shanker following him booted Boumsong off the ball and punching Ricksen…….. all in front of the Rangers fans.

Worse though, is the headline and story writers - always in it for a cheap buck, always in it to sell papers.

Got to agree with VDH on this. Wouldn’t buy that rag, and many Rangers websites have been running a campaign for years not buy the Record and Sunday Mail. They will stick it into either side of the old firm if they have a chance.
Look at someone like Keevins. disliked by the Gers support, but also escorted out of Celtic press conferences in the past. He is a professional journalist and doesn’t let his support for Celtic get in the way of his job.
There is only one journalist writing for the main newspapers who is outright biased - the corduroy-wearing gay baptist.

It amazes me how any young man who grew up on the West coast of Scotland, couldn’t be pulled by the lure of Celtic or Rangers, that being the case, when some of these men go into reporting, why is it they suddenly become, St Mirren, Motherwell, Clyde supporters.
Is it because the common outlook would be not to accept them if their true affiliation were known? Does it mean we should accept their purported neutrality if they lie about their childhood heroes? I would be more willing to read a report knowing the affiliation rather than thinking he

Except that another paper would take its place - the real issue is the “nosey neebor” attitude of institutionalised vindictiveness which pervades Scottish society (British society too - just look at the shite being dealt out to Sven Goran Eriksson right now because he and another adult decided to have sex … with EACH OTHER!!!)
I know so many Gers fans who call it “The Daily Rebel” and so many Celts who call it “The Daily Ranger”. Enough said. In many ways its the opposite side of the coin from Bill Murray’s books - we’ve had Blue and Greennoses on here stating in no uncertain terms that the Aussie-based author is a diehard Ger or Celt because he seems to give one half of the Old Firm a harder time than the other. Each of these correspondents, of course, thought Murray suported “the enemy” - it’s impossible for all these people to be correct.
Murray tries to analyse the Old Firm scene as neutraly as possible yet is panned for it. Whereas the Record tries to wind up both sets of the OF as much as possible and is panned for it - BUT the Record still flourishes … not least because both Rangeras FC and Celtic FC both work hand-in-hand with the publication.
I’ve been at Rangers AGMs (Cheers, Derek!) where this topic is brought up by Gers punters - the supporterds want the Record kicked out or they at least want their fellow fans to stop buying it - but the Directors can never endorse such a move. So the Daily retard must be worth more to the clubs than any damage it can cause.
Sure there are ocassional embargos on Record journos when they go particularly OTT - the Celtic Xmas night out in Newcstle was, in my opinion, fu*ing shocking: A straightforward case of harrasment and incitement by the hack and photographer involved, sleazebags of the highest order who went down there with every intention of winding these players up and then acting all pathetically shocked and innocent when they got a less than buddhist reaction - but still the Old Firm clubs by and large accept the Record’s money and give their journos the titbits they need.
Speaking for my own team, the Main stand at Ibrox is plastered with adverts for the Retard and, even if it wasn’t promoted by the club, Amoruso’s horrific “autobiography” was ghosted by Keith Jackson and Some other wally fae the paper of “real Scots”.
Its a democracy - if people are stupid enough to read the Record then fine (But the treatment of Rangers and Celtic is NOTHING compared with the stinking little attitudes they try to perpetuate upon infinitely more important areas of Scottish society) but we should be aware of how much our own clubs boost this and other rags and how much they are financed By it.
We should also be aware of the number of times an atmosphere at any given game we attend has been charged up by stories in the tabloids.
The tabloid guys are openly scummy - they can actually be quite funny once you know how to take them and their construction of a match report is often bordering on art - but the guys who get me are the broadsheet journos who try to dress up their bigory in pollysylabic, literate terms.
Step forward, Michael Grant. Aberdeen supporter and hater of Rangers. But I keep reading him because, at teh end of the day, he knows what he’s talking about and I know how to take him … Iknow when to fill in teh blanks.
Derek - you, me and Speiro - I’m still not convinced. He’s defo ashamed of the Rangers SUPPORT at times and he has fallen out with Murray - but that could be the support of any football team anywhere and the chairman of any club. However, he has openly admitted to being a Ragers fan in his childhood and then, when he became a journo, “going neutral”.

However I do disagree with your assessment of Vignal. He looks OK to me. On Rae, I feel sorry for him as he is the only midfielder we seem to have. Andrews’s Spurs’ performance appears to be a flash in the pan, and hopefully Eck realises that he can’t be let loose on anything better than Hearts (or Sutton/Hartson).
I was most amused by the fact that Alex Rae scored more than Camara last season….that’s my last getitupye for the season.

My point is that in the face of the criticism leveled at Rangers football team and their fans and such criticism being ignored and even denied, McLeish in fact endorsed the actions of the fans, if the shoe had been on the other foot we would be denounced as paranoid feniens.

I’m not aware of any incidents involving the fans at the Fulham or Newcastle games. I watched both games and didn’t see Boa Morte being attacked, or any other incident worthy of note. I understand the Newcastle police praised the Gers support and said there were less incidents than they would normally get for a premiership game. But something must have happened or I wouldn’t have anything to deny, right?
I think that you are not aware why Celtic fans are accused of being paranoid. It’s not because you ignore facts.
