David ex machina
Without spoiling the plot of this latest enjoyable slice of Ben Stiller silliness, let’s just say there’s a huge tresure chest of money appears at the end and it saves the day for the dodgeball team we’re all rooting for. It’s quite literally a tresure chest and on it, if you look carefully, are inscirbed the words “Deus ex machina”. The film’s production team were obviously having a wee private joke to themselves.
Now I don’t want to bore the new red away strip off you any more than I already have but this is a term relating to a convention in drama, stemming from it’s Greek origins, in which, as the Latin says “a god out of a machine” arrives at the end to resolve the tangled plot in favour of the hero. The ancient Greek actors/playwrights used to have a “god” (Otto Rehaggel perhaps) lowered down onto the stage by some ancient mechanical device as if he was descending from the heavens/Mount Olympus/whatever.
In the play this was the often naff way in which all the complicated twist and turns of fate could be resolved in one fell swoop to let the protagonist - and, no doubt, an exhausted scriptwriter - off the hook.
A BIT LIKE WHAT DAVID MURRAY IS ABOUT TO DO WITH THE GERS (See!? It’s, like, almost a big treasure chest for Rangers and it’ll save us … yeah - I know - sorry about that).
There’s a rights issue in the offing and The Muray Mint, returning as Chairman, is about to underwrite it
There’s been more informed discussion on the feedback posts on other pieces in this site than I can offer you - just see regular-reader Stuart’s brilliant description of what “High Finance” means to him and you have my level of business knowledge down to a tee.
All I know is we are perilously skint and Murray’s been getting the blame. Now the guy wants to come back and try to sort it out. YES, using OUR dosh too but, what the fu** - if we care so much then why shouldn’t we pitch in and help out?! Rangers Family ‘n aw that.
My view on Murray has always been “who else was trying to pump money into us at the time and why the hell shouldn’t he have tried to live the dream of Rangers at the top of the Euro pile - that’s what we punters all wanted” Rangers had to go for it in the late nineties. We failed but not trying would have been a bigger failure.
If the debt we’re in leads us to bamkruptcy then yeah, okay, I’ll have to change my mind on that and will lead the attempted assasination attempts on DM but right now the discusion will be “is Murray to be trusted back at he helm of our club”?
I’m gonae say yes. He brought us Nine In A Row and he took us closer than ever before to winning the European Cup. That KINDA evened out if he ever did actually take us to the brink of financal meltdown - if we ever were that close - but he has the money and the nous to sort it all out. He’s been planning it for months - just take a look at the the BRILLIANT, AWARD-WINNING(maybe someday), BESTSELLING, BLOCK-BUSTING tombe The Advocaat Years and it’s clear DM was only sitting on the sidelines until he thought things were getting just too out of hand. That time is now.
Bring it on, DM. I’m sick of watching that mob from the east end sitting in our chair - I’m pretty sure he is too. He ain’t no “deus” but get the ropes and pulleys out - wheel that man back into the saddle and lets get our heroes back on track.
Also went to see the Bourne Supremacy - but I’ll save that for when we’re back on the European trail against Maritimo …
