Derek, as usual you’re spot on. DM profited from an extremely weak celtic during the early 90’s instead of creating this success from any talent of his own. NIAR was a great achievement but had Murray steered the club wisely during this period we would STILL be light years ahead of celtic, instead of being so far behind we can’t even see their dust. 10 years ago we had players like Gough, Laudrup, McCall, McCoist, Hateley & Goram - all of them seasoned internationalists and a team with a collective work ethic which meant they were never beaten. Meanwhile celtic were 2 hrs away from going into liquidation with a team of no-hopers, a crumbling stadium and few season-ticket holders.
Yet within a few short years, they had taken our league title back, had a new stadium & were investing astutely in playing staff. Murray likes to set great store by the amounts invested in players during his time as chairman, but the fact is that many of these were bad investments made at the wrong time. For instance, how much was Walter Smith given to spend after NIAR was clinched, in comparison to the vast amounts given to Advocrap just a year later after they had lost the league title? The time to invest heavily is when you are on top, not playing catch-up.
