Time to dust off the “McLeish Must Go” banners, methinks. Just when it looked like he was starting to get a grip as well. Two Old Firm wins, top of the league and good position in Europe, then:
1) Miserable performance against Inverness to hand the initiative back to celtic (as has happened so often in the past under McLeish)
2) Requiring ONE point out of SIX in the UEFA cup, Rangers somehow manage to manufacture 2 defeats and tumble out of arguably the weakest group. Abysmal, and yet another demonstration of how far out of his depth McLeish is in Europe (6 wins in 18 matches and numerous humiliations). After the green shoots of recovery a few weeks ago, Agent Orange McLeish and his pesticide players have killed off the flowers of optimism to be relaced by the trophyless barren wasteland of failure we are now becoming familiar with in the McLeish era. Is this Murray’s idea of the success Rangers fans can expect to enjoy now that our “hero” has wiped out the massive debt he himself accumulated? Probably. I don’t believe your comment on McLiesh losing with more dignity than MON, but if there’s any creedence to it wouldn’t it be that he’s had more practice.
Timahoy, the point is that McLeish loses with more dignity than MON WINS with.
Regardless of who wins more football matches, I know which one I’d want as the manager of my team - the one with dignity, self-respect and pride. This reflects the character of the club he (mis)manages. Of course, you could say that MON’s character also reflects the character of his club - arrogance, a refusal to accept personal responsibility, paranoia and a knee-jerk tendency to blame all others for your misfortune instead of looking in a mirror and having the self-respect to admit your failings and commit to improve upon them. MON could make finger-pointing an Olympic sport, one in which he’d have a chance to display all the same character defects which make him (IMHO) such a failure as a human being.
That’s why comparisons with Jock Stein are so laughable. Stein dragged celtic from the footballing gutter and, although a sharp operator, earned respect from colleagues and opponents alike. MON on the other hand may have provided some footballing riches for celtic but is dragging the club into moral bankruptcy with his increasingly bizarre and unsubstantiated accusations.
