Nacho a certainty for Spain
… naw - not a certainty to be transferred to a Spanish club but, I feel, an absolute certainty now to get a game in Villarreal, one week tonight.
We all know about our manager’s “colourful” attitude to team selection - especially as it applies to strikers: Ye have the top scorer in the SPL in your squad? - take him off at half-time in an SPL match in which we’re struggling to score against Aberdeen. Ye can’t decide which two of Buffel, Prso, Boyd or Lovenkrands should start up front against Celtic? Easy! Pick Nacho Novo, who hasn’t started a game in weeks and hasn’t kicked a baw all season. That’ll fool them … into beating us … when we clearly have a far better collection of players.
The one thing we know about Alex McLeish’s line-ups is that we never know what they’ll be. His “outta left field” moments can work - an unfit Prso came on for Boyd when Kris was on a hat-trick against Livvy and Prso promptly banged in two goals in two minutes to seal the three points: Namouchi came out of nowhere to start against Villarreal and, yes, I think that move worked too.
So, having accepted that the Ginger Gaffer never does what we expect him to, we should think counter-intuitively if we want to forecast his team for our Champions League last 16 second leg.
Nacho Novo is today in the news saying he wants a move to La Liga, as it’ll help him win a place in the Spanish national side - maybe even in time for the World Cup finals, eh Nach??!! Quite why he thinks even Malaga or Cadiz would want a player who can’t win back his starting place at a club clinging on to third in the SPL is beyond me but - hey - he’s the one making the noises.
Normally you would think “that’s his bridges burned with McLeish” but no - Nacho will play against Villarreal because Eck will think the wee man will play extra-special-good if he’s trying to get a move to the country in which we’ll play yet another “most important game of the season” next Tuesday night.
Prso’s suspended but methinks Eck’ll drop Buffel and Lovenkrands anyway.
Hey! It’ll make the opposition think!
