   have to say I think the suggestion of not going to away games in Europe for a year is a good one. I know the implications but it will send a strong message to the numpties as we are not being allowed the time to self-police the situation. Next season sees the introduction of penalties in domestic games so this needs to be dealt with now.

   BUT!!!!

   This still does not deal with the problem of sectarianism and if we follow Celtics lead and just push it away from the ground and ignore that it exists then I fear that we will have an increase in violence away from football, everyone here can see the sheer hatred that exists in sections of the celtic support for Rangers, and that it is constantly seeking a way to express itself, society in Scotland cannot afford both groups to go underground as that will create a recruitment ground for other more sinister organisations.

    The formation of Glasgow Celtic [was] the brainchild of the Marist Brother Walfrid, who saw in football and its popularity a means for him and the catholic community fulfilling the twin aims of his mission: feeding the poor of the East End of Glasgow and keeping them out of the clutches of protestantism. A catholic football team would occupy young lads in their leisure time and the revenue from the games would go to help feed the poor of one of the most depressed areas in a vast industrial city not unknown for its poverty. On both accounts the team conceived by Brother Walfrid… was a great success.

    Below is an excerpt from “The Old Firm” by Bill Murray.

    The Celtic Football Club was founded for and by catholics, and although it has never been exclusively catholic, it remains a catholic club. It recognises Ireland as the country of its spiritual origins, and although today it has lost all formal contacts with Irish politics, in its early days it was closely associated with the fight for Irish Home Rule. Today the club remains proud of its Irish origins.
    It is well known that one of the reasons brother Walfrid, a Marist brother, sought the formation of a catholic football team was to help feed and clothe the poor of the parishes where he worked. But as well as concern for the suffering poor, brother Walfrid was also prompted by a fear that protestant soup kitchens might tempt young catholics into apostasy. Moreover he was equally worried about the dangers of young catholics meeting protestants in their place of employment or leisure, particularly during the years after leaving school which he considered the most dangerous as far as “religious duties” were concerned. A catholic football club then, could serve the dual purpose of easing the pain in starving stomachs at the same time as it kept young catholics together in their leisure time, free from the temptations of protestants and protestantism.     The simple fact is that radical redevelopment of the area surrounding Celtic Park will be of great benefit to the club. It opens up the opportunity for Celtic to invest in a hotel/village complex where the car park (and a small primary school) are situated at present. This would prove to be a significant source of revenue to Celtic.

    All of those most pro-active in the campaign that sportscotland relocates to Parkhead - McConnell, McAveety and Purcell - are Celtic supporters. GDC sold 3 streets to Celtic for the princely sum of 1p. This decision was taken by a committee consisting entirely of Celtic season ticket holders and/or shareholders. A leader of GCC has unashamedly admitted that ‘GCC and Celtic are inextricably linked’.

    I can fully understand the Rangers support for being up-in-arms for the way they’re being treated due to the Osasana debacle, lets face it and be honest here, they did nothing worse than they did at Parkhead last Sunday and yet there was no outry, as a matter of fact the big picture in the paper was Lennon throwing an empty water bottle into an empty team dugout.
    Even when clear evidence of them singing “up to our knees” “FTP” “Jack McConnell’s wife’s a whore” and all the while wrecking numerous seats (which rankurs will end up paying for) and basicly acting the way they normally do.
    So what changed?

    Well the fact that they were now in front of a European press in a country which likes the Pope and where Sir Minty’s reach has no effect, that’s what changed.

    So I for one can be one Tim who can stand up and say
    “I understand your outrage and you should change for no man, no matter what punishment they bring upon you, stand your ground and remember that you are da peepel”

    I,m sorry iang but i’ve got to disagree that the self ban is a good one, don’t know if you go abroad mate but I do and i feel that it would almost be a moral victory for the “numpties” surely we have to drive these assholes out and lets not kid ourselves it’s very acheivable the pictures are in the press, take their passports Mr McIntyre it has been done down south lets do it here. We must not give the mankies or their media the satisfaction, we must prove as we have done on many occasions that we can be the ecxellent supporters the majority of us are.Do not deprieve the majority for the minority just weed them out.Plus it’s nice to get away from the bird for a couple of days!

    I know it is rough but we were doing ok with the self-policing up until 3/4 years ago and then the atmosphere in the media changed and we wer no longer allowed that. This would send a message, for one season only, that it will no longer be tolerated. If we make the big decision to do it ourselves by choice then the victory is ours not theirs.

    Iang the aymosphere didn’t change 3/4 years ago, the world press was placed at everyones fingertips and the previously condoned actions of the Rangers supporters by the laptop loyal were now out there for all to see and question, this is not a change that the Scottish press has welcomed because questions are being asked of them as to why this was not reported.
    When Celtic began the purge of sectarion members (and there were a bunch) Rangers did not follow suit and actualy denied that they had a problem, at that time the press did you a terrible injustice by agreeing by default.
    They should have been screeming from the heavens to insist that you do have a problem and that not only should you have been following our example but being the establishment team you should have been leading.

    Celtic knew that with the globalization of everything it was only a matter of time before we would be punished the way things were, and with the track record of the press, we would be opened bare for all to see and took the initiative.

    Rangers FC have a problem in that this is being played out in their name, they will be punished for it even though they have been fighting against it for years. That is the unfortunate truth, as a Rangers fan I think it is time the club took a hardline approach to protect itself and the genuine fans, I don’t believe it will solve anything but it will take the focus away from the club.

    The change was political and with Celtic officials coming out denying they had a problem (see peter lawell, martin o’neil interviews of the time) the focus was placed solely on Rangers, I am too tired of explaining why that is wrong and what the implications are for the whole of Scottish society not just Rangers. All Celtic have succeded in doing is driving it away from parkhead, it still goes on within your support to this day so please do not kid yourself.

    In your ignorance you forget that both Celtic and Rangers have been working jointly for the best part of 20 years to get rid of the sectarian elements but by doing it through education and in the community not through attacks in the media.

    In the past 3 - 4 years we have seen repeated attacks on one side of a 2 sided problem, is it any wonder then that the ones being attacked are getting more numerous as they gather support with the more extreme elements tagging along to make trouble while the other side that is not being criticised are still doing it and getting away with it?

    This issue is not about UEFA, it is not about Rangers, it is not about Celtic, it is about bigotry! To only focus on football and to only focus on one club you are ignoring the real problem and encouraging it to be kept alive.

    I don’t agree at all, Celtic and Rangers have not been working together, only in the last 3/4 years have Rangers taken any worthwhile stand, just last year Spiers interviewed a Rangers trust (I think) spokesman who then and I believe now refused to condemn “Up to our knees”
    This is something which has been forced on to you by an economic levy, if Scottish games were still the main source of income Rangers and there support would carry on as in the past, like I said previous the support did no worse in Spain than they did in Parkhead and yet the consequences are vastly different.
    The answer to you problems are simple,if the support continue to be anti-catholic then don’t play in Spain, France, Italy, Brazil, Portugal, Croatia tec.

    Iang, I’ve got to disagree with you on this self-imposed ban.

    It will not stop people travelling and drive more fans underground. We could end up with more unofficial fans travelling rather than less, and the problem could get worse.

    You also end up punishing the guys who behaved themselves, as Barca72 highlighted.

    Will it end up sending a mesage? I’m not so sure. If the message hasn’t got through already, I don’t know that this message would get through either.

    I’m also unaware to what self-policing you are referring to.

    but derek, that is the point I think…any fan travelling will be able to be identified as they should not be there, the decent fans will suffer but it willl be for the good of the club, this is not an issue that Rangers can fix on their own.

    Fans at Ibrox were already complaing about the behaviour of other Rangers fans, couple of guys getting tuffed out at Rangers v PAOK Solonika for their comments, and others where they were just asked to shut up…that’s just the ones I witnessed. just my opinion m8 as I have noticed a distinct change in the atmosphere over the past few seasons but then I have also changed seat twice.

    Iang, you are assuming that the overseas team are bothered about identifying independent Gers fans. Both sets of oldfirm fans have proven that they will attend in greta numbers and the overseas club are generally quite happy to sell to them,. That happens and we still get the problems, but now we don’t know who any of the fans in the stadium are.

    Not necessarily Derek, Rangers could have their own people there as they do now. I do wish it had not come to this butI feel that if the club take the action themsleves then it is showing that they are doing something, and pre-empts them from being forced into more drastic actions.

    However, I wish it did not come to that and there is no clear indication that it will. There is nothing to suggest that UEFA will be considering the youtube footage, even though they have seen it, if it is not in any of the match reports. Also, UEFA have also already ruled that in the west of Scotland there is a unique social problem involving religious differences.

    Hopefully you are correct. UEFA have to take into consideration the fact that STB was played to our fans when these sections are deliberately not played at Ibrox because of this. What’ll be next?     Sorry Derek I am not assuming that I assure you, I would like there to be another solution but I fear that if the club do not take action then UEFA will and that is the option on the table, someone suggested only doing it for old-firm games and I would fight that suggestion very strongly because that slo would just brush it under the carpet.

    I do however firmly believe that given time we could do it ourselves, unlike Celtic hiding behind their “it is not Religious it is Political” stance but actually doing it for real, in the mean time the focus of UEFA is on Rangers and they may well punish us, we cannot ignore it.

    I have to admit to falling in to the trap myslef in failing to seperate out the 2 issues at times (not saying you or anyone else do), 1. What’s wrong at Rangers FC and what can we do we about it ot protect the club and 2. What’s wrong in the west of Scotland and what can be done about it.

    The solution to this will not come from football but it is a football club that is being punished .

    iang, we can’t influence society unfortuunately. The best we can do is try and influence the problem element within our support.

    The club can take action, but not necesarily what Bain was proposing. I believe they need to be a lot more proactive in identifying what can and what can’t be sung. There are still to many grey areas.

    The club needs to be positive about our history and heritage. We need to try and get as many people as possible to buy into it. The club are taking a school teacher attitude that isn’t working. The Wee Blue Book? How patronising did that end up? The principle is good, but, it’s just like everything else Bain touches. It is just done badly.

    The message of why it isn’t acceptable needs to be put in a different way so that there is a better chance of it sinking in.

    Murray could do it if he really wanted to but the way to get there would be difficult for him, and he isn’t willing to make that step. It’s always the easy answer and just hope that the problem goes away. Their solution to Villareal was text book in terms of presenting a fr nt to UEFA, but wasn’t really addressing the underlying issues.

    I’m not sure if the above comes across as a lot of generalities. I could expand on each point significantly, but I havn’t the time, and huge paragraphs with a lot of detail don’t really work in a blog like this.

    We are both trying for the same thing, but just see getting there in different ways.

    When Uefa punished Rangers their statement was that they were watching everyone and that came in response to the question “Are Celtic being watched also”

    Harry Taking the current UEFA situation out of the equation, do you really think the songs sung by Rangers have never been influenced by their rivalry with Celtic? Do you think the reponse “God Bless the Pope and the IRA” is not incitement to religious and racial intolerence? Never mind the popular modern cry of the Celtic fan “FTQ is not religious it is political” btw it is still bigoted.

    It is very easy to to talk about what is hapening with UEFA right now, and it is an issue that needs to be resolved for the clubs future (see my earlier posts), but there is also the domestic issue which UEFA referred to last year as a very unique situation not only involving Rangers but was a matter for the local clubs and the SFA. This most certainly does involve Celtic and there fans, look at the videos of Milan, are you saying these are acceptable because it is done away from the ground?

    Do you think that Roman Catholics from around the world would be proud of the association between their religion and a terrorist organisation and the use of the sing of the cross as an incitement to hatred? You may wish it to be so but the 2 clubs are linked and so are the fans thier songs , thier history and their repsonses. Failure to acknowledge this will result in failure to finally get rid of the problem.

    I do not hate Celtic, I do not hate their fans, I love Rangers football club.

    I am just replying to what I read mate. Nothing in the statement above would suggest you are not a catholic and a Celtic suppporter.

    Once again we resort to ‘tit for tat’ arguments about who is more responsible for the problems we are now seeing at Ibrox.
    We, as Rangers supporters shouldn’t be worried about what is happening at breezblock boulevard. We should only be concerned about what happens at Ibrox and, when Rangers are playing away, at our end of the ground.
    Clear, concise, guidelines for what can and cannot be sung must be communicated to all supporters of the Rangers Football Club. I, for one, couldn’t give a toss about Celtic and their support. What I do care about is Rangers and the message we transmit to others.
    If we are banned from Europe, maybe then will we stand up and point out those who seek to bismirch the good name of the club I love.
    Celtic supporters are taking the moral high ground. However, this is down to us and our intolerances. Let us clean up our own act and then we can take over this high ground because, if we clean up our act, then the focus will have to switch elsewhere and the others who constantly seek to criticise and shoot us down will have to look at their own house.
    While I am on a roll, why do we not have new songs written to celebrate the history of Rangers? These could quite easily highlight the beginnings and culture of the club as a Scottish institution, without having to trawl up what happened in NI over 300 years ago. Lets face it, the Scots were more to do with the reformation and the end of the RC rule (in the UK) than any other group in history. I am sure we have enough genuine songwriters within our support who could come up with a few new songs which celebrate our club, without the need to resort to bigotry and racism or by the glorification of murderers and paramilitary organisations.
    We need to move on. We need to be seen to clean up our act. Not because of the other teams but in spite of them.

    first time viewer and celtic supporter since 1945, i will only say that if celtic practiced a catholic only i would not be watching the games here in canada. my family background is mixed and the reason dor my celtic leanings are that only guy willing to take me to games was aceltic supporter. john thomson bobby evans bobby collins willie fernie jock stein kenny dalgleishm the lisbon lions, all men of honour and principle. henrik larson……..
