The Longest Day

No, not another attempt at a film homage - but an equally distracted, if not disinterested summer rant.

Copa America starts next week - must get Sky in for the first week. Anyone know of any such offer? I’ll be in Spain the second week and hopefully I can watch two Spanish-speaking countries contesting the final in a Basque bar somewhere. Coz I would LOVE to see an Argentina-Uruguay decider.

Not only are Brazil treating the competition a tad contemptuosly - Kaka and Ronaldinho taking their Jesus-loving shite to the beach rather than Caracas - but, as I spent most of last summer explaining, Brazil must die: “They’re the Dolphins of international football”, as a friend of mine once said, ” and sharks are infintely more interesting - they just get a bad press because the media panders to cretins”.

Oh PLEASE give me a Uruguay-Argentina final or at least give me one of those two winning it. The hosts? President Chavez will be loving the attention in a Red Mussolini stylee but Venezuela is a BASEBALL country. In South America that’s a disgrace. Fuck them. It should always go to the countries who want it more and when Uruguay, a country with a population of over 3 million, has never won fewer Copa Americas than Brazil, a country with a population of over 150 million, you can guess who has the more authentic desire..

Why oh WHY did Paulo Montero have to retire this year? The Celeste could have wheeled him out for one more display of psychotic defending on the international stage. His own brilliance of delivery of brutal tackles saw him denied, at Old Trafford in 2003, his rightful place in history - the first man to be sent off in a European Cup final; but in a Copa America, Montero could have done something to avenge Jens lehmann’s PATHETIC stealing of his crown.

Yeah I know Lehmann’s German so he coudlnae play in teh Copa America but what i mean is … Oh, fuck it -

It’s the longest day of the year and almost the last thing on my mind is Rangers. I’ve bottomed out - I’m half way between what was and what will be at Ibrox - last season and next season are equidistant on either side: they’re both hazy, difficult to see clearly. Fuck them - I’m happy enough here for a week or two. The anxiety and excitement about one Gers campaign will return when I get to grips with the other.

For now, it’s Wimbledon, Tour de France, the Copa America, a wank over Riquelme’s first goal for Boca Juniors in Porto Alegre last night and a laugh at the utter predictability of an Holland-England penalty shoot out almost lasting til it got dark in the northern hemisphere at THIS time of the year. The two worst penalty-taking nations in international football - even at under-21 level there’s no surprise neither could finsih it off last night. What was the final score? 36- 35 …?

Naismith, Beesley, Brellier - all the rumours and wind-ups can wait. And ye can stick yer Stonehenge too. I’m off to watch Harold Pinter doing a Krapp.
