WE’VE BEEN BETRAYED: TIME FOR A PROTEST.
Right troops, I’m getting an early night before the Norn Iron game at Humpden - by the way, see if ye work in an office, get one of those little yellow “Postit” pads and cut one of the pages into the shape of a star and write “originality” across it. When some Partick Thistle fan passes ye gleefully in the canteen shouting “who ye gonnae support tonight then? Scotland or yer AIN country??!! Ho.Ho.Ho!”, calmly declaim “We have a winner! Gold Star!” and slap it on his tit (However, if it’s a female Rangers-hater, simply hand it to her and advise applying her prize anywhere she sees fit. Kinda defeats the purpose of yer war on cliched bigotry if ye then start a new one on sexual harrasment and misogyny. Apparently.) - so I’m going to leave ye in the capable hands of our regular poster, A Moses MacNeil Sandal, who has just picked up another story from the PA wire by our favourite reporter, Archie MacMontford:
David Murray, Walter Smith and Barry Ferguson came out tonight and demanded the players and employees of Rangers protest against the current support. The three lifelong Rangers men united behind a ‘sack the fans’ banner after Saturdays 2-0 victory over Hearts.
Murray explained his annoyance. “Having been at the club 20 years, winning 13 leagues in that time I felt a couple of years ago the time was right for me to stand down. I’ve taken the club as far as I can, I’m not getting any younger. I lost my wife a couple of years back and my children are all reared. It’s time for me to take it a bit easier and step back from the limelight.
“I’ve avoided selling the club to the first Eastern European with a dodgy background, no knowledge of the club or its history and is really only interested in not being extradited if things turn sour in his home land.
“Likewise I’ve ignored the locals with bigger mouths than wallets who’d like me to give them the club even though they’ve never proved they have any experience or ability to run a multi-million pound business. I’ve avoided it so far because I love the club and don’t want to see it destroyed when I go but it seems that isn’t what the fans want:
“Basically ‘anyone but Murray’ seems to be the current cry.
“I remember Chris Robinson telling me this could happen and I didn’t believe him. On balance I still think I’m right so I’m calling for all the Rangers support to do the decent thing and fall on their swords. For God’s sake GO! You’re an embarrassment to the club! Pass your season tickets (if you’ve not already handed it back), scarves and fanzines on to someone who cares about the team and will support us though the straits be broad or narrow.’
Walter Smith concurred with Murray. “When I came back the team was a shambles. I’d a cushy number at the SFA where no one expected us to win half the games we played and I was feted as a managerial genius. I gave that up to fix the mess at Rangers and bring a bit of pride back. We’ve won 2 trophies, took the league to the last day and made the final of a European tournament for the first time in 36 years - not bad for one full season I felt.
“We had a bad result against Kaunas but only 36,000 bothered to turn up for the home game so we figured the fans didn’t really care about Europe this season anyway. I’ve taken nothing but pelters from some since I came back. They don’t like me buying players I know, have worked with before, and trust.
“I’ve been told I’m not a Rangers man because I signed the current first choice Scotland centre forward and because one of the players I didn’t know, but signed as we played against him, who turned out to be bloody great, decided to move to a stronger league for more money making the club a healthy profit into the bargain. Perhaps they’d rather I’d signed Graveson or Balde.
“It’s clear to me these fans don’t have the club’s best interests at heart and are past it. I’d like to see some new fans come in, perhaps some young European ones, you know, like we saw at Ibrox last season, that stand and sing all game long no matter the score and only sing about their team, not shit that happened hundreds of years ago and has nothing to do with football.
“Maybe we should try some other fans from smaller Scottish clubs, give them a chance, see how they enjoy competing for leagues, winning trophies and playing in Europe. I thought we were all about loyalty, I feel betrayed.”
Ferguson spoke for the players. “Some of the fans are unreal so they are. Did they know see us last season or something? They do ma nut in sometimes the way they get on a players back the minute they do something wrong - do they know understand that just makes the player more anxious?! And it’s always the young guys, guys like Adam and Broadfoot, two guys who could really do with some backing and support, that get it worst.
“And the atmosphere at Ibrox these days is pure shite: Guys turn up late, shout abuse at their bête noir player then fuck off way 10 minutes tae go. And they’ve got the brass neck tae accuse US of no being good enough!!
“And lets know even talk about whit happened in Manchester. Naw, we think it’s time all the rest of the support sent back their season tickets tae. I mean, efter last season you’d think they’d be queuing round Edmiston Drive to watch us but naw, we get some 2 bob demonstration outside the ground after one league match, which we won. So me and all the players have decided, We Deserve Better. We feel betrayed. What happened to We are the People? We want new people cause you lot are crap at supporting a proper football team.”
Genious stuff from Archie and Moses. As usual. I would also advise you to have a look through the thread under my own slightly sarcastic rant about Saturday’s game against Hearts - on the rhs of the home page. Therein you will also discover a reply of similair genious - but on a far more personal topic - by one Timothy Waits, brother of the lately discovered Terry.
You’ll also see plenty Internecine bile from myself, such as …
… insisting that “Intelligent people” have had the wool pulled over their eyes by something as trivial as a few signings of football players?
New players? At a FOOTBALL CLUB, of all places? WHATEVER can Murray be thinking of???!!
This is right up there with that con he pulled last season, getting us to the UEFA CUP FINAL to “paper over the cracks”.
NO. Enough, Eck. Sarcasm amnesty for a second.
Methinks that it’s PERENIALLY THICK BASTARDS who develop this archetype of intelligent behaviour which appears as a mutated reflection of what’s happened to them their whole life: They’ve been continually put right by those who know better.
So, when these thickos see a crowd of people who appear to be quite happy with the way their football club’s being run they decide to “Put them right” by telling them something they didn’t know - it’s usually “see what you thought was good - naw - it’s SHITE.”
Trouble is - thickos don’t realise that ye actually have to KNOW something someone else doesn’t. It’s not enough just to make it up for effect. All ye need to know about football is players, cup finals and league titlle races. It’s THAT simple - and Murrays’ done it better than any Rangers man this side of the D-Day landings.
Yes. Some folk like to fool themselves they’re intelligent by continually OBFUSCATING the cold, hard simplicity of football success - getting to cup finals and challenging for the title and signing new players and winning far more matches than ye lose.
They’re usually the kind of person who is so bitter about their own position in life that they’ll even start describing their own team’s wins as “lucky”, even before bitter Celtic fans do the same.
Sorry to all the decent lads and lasses of this blog - yer right about the need to avoid polarising teh support bit but sometimes ye just have tae hit back as hard as ye take it. Zat not right? Some folk simply don’t know when they’re being quietly tolerated - ye have tae SPELL IT OUT FUR THUM.
But, all that said, I also think David Murray’s wee story in yesterday’s papers, about refusing to let a potential buyer sell us off was just too good to be true - we don’t need to start rearranging the details so they prove he was wrong to leave it so late to ask these buyers about their intentions, blah - blah - blah. The anti-Murray brigade don’t need to go into that much detail. They already have a little victory. We only have to know that the story itself is just a bit too handy.
Likewise , I seemed to be the only Bears in the woods who thought Murray’s open declaration against sections of the press a few years back - calling them “anti-Rangers” and all that paranoid pish - was totally fucking embarrassing.
This is not a BLIND love of the man on my part. Its just TOTAL LOVE!
Like any ballsy businessman, he’s sneaky and he sometimes gets things wrong. But I tend to judge on the wider picture, not just the one-off moments which can be twisted to suit my own agenda.
